19 CCNs
There are 19 National Choreographic Centres across France.
What is a National Choreographic Centre?
In 1984, the Ministry of Culture and local authorities approved the founding of National Choreographic Centres (CCN). The initiative had one specific purpose: to structure choreographic creation in France and its international outreach. The CCN label brings together resources and workspaces, for choreographers and directors to ensure their artistic development and the dissemination of their work.
By 1989, the Ministry of Culture viewed the CCNs as hubs for dance development that could support a whole national choreographic network. Each hub would develop based on its own resources and local context.
In 1991, Minister of Culture and Communications Jack Lang announced plans to support the creation and dissemination of choreographic works through awareness campaigns, the hosting of companies to ensure aesthetic pluralism, and the implementation of training policies. These efforts were designed to align with each company’s purpose and involve local authorities.
In 1995, the CCNs established a network known as the Association des CCN (ACCN, the Association of choreographic Centres).
In 1998, the Charter of public service missions for live performance, signed by Catherine Trautmann, outlined the operational frameworks for various groups funded by the State, including the CCNs.
However, the CCNs wanted their own foundational document, thus collaborating with the Délégation de la danse (DMDTS/Ministry of Culture) to draft a framework agreement, which both parties began using in 2005.
In August 2010, Frédéric Mitterrand signed an official circular memorandum detailing the implementation of a partnership policy for the performing arts, through labels and national networks. The policy arose from interviews held in Valois in 2008, and organised by Minister of Culture and Communications Christine Albanel. Aurélie Filippetti revised the official document, which was publicly released on February 22, 2013.
But, since 2017, the reference document has been the decree outlining the terms of reference associated with the CCN label.
CCNs and CDCNs
CCNs are complemented by National Choreographic Development Centres (CDCNs), which primarily focus on promoting choreographic art and disseminating cultural works, while supporting their production programmes.
The CDCN network includes 13 centres across France, with their terms of reference also established by decree on May 5, 2017.
