Centre chorégraphique national de Rennes et de Bretagne | FAIR-E
Direction Collectif FAIR-E
In January 2019, six artists and two producers from the hip-hop world began to manage the Centre Chorégraphique National de Rennes et de Bretagne (CCNRB). With this unprecedented move, the Collectif FAIR-E brought a new practical approach to the choreographic institution.
Bouzid Aït Atmane, Iffra Dia, Céline Gallet, Linda Hayford, Saïdo Lehlouh, Marion Poupinet and Ousmane Sy (who passed away in 2020, but whose artistic repertoire is still represented by the collective) strive for supportive, horizontal governance, focused on common interests, and a process-based approach.
With the concept of “fairness” in mind, the collective uses the foundations of the counterculture from where hip-hop originates to question the definition of art, the institutional rules of showcasing, sharing, training and archiving. It is normal then to discuss self-teaching, gender equality, universality and deviance. These values are championed by offering spaces for spontaneous initiatives, supporting amateur groups, and implementing a knowledge and know-how sharing programme.
Through the Code Source programme, the CCNRB incorporated to its projects three artists characterised by hybrid and marginal expressions, collectively exploring what transdisciplinarity means. The venue also hosts a community of artists and users during friendly events (Millésime, Radio Plouf, Grande distribution and Les Heures Joyeuses). The collective and the CCNRB team are highly attentive to issues of accessibility and freedom of expression, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to fighting discrimination.
The venue
The Théâtre Chorégraphique de Rennes et de Bretagne was founded in 1978 by Gigi Caciuleanu, a Romanian artist with Greek and Russian heritage. Caciuleanu advocated for a metaphorical movement of sentiments and relations at the heart of theatre life. He reinterpreted both the academic legacy of the Bolshoi, and the contemporary legacy of Miriam Raducanu. Alongside artist and director Dan Mastacan, he managed the 12-dancer company until 1993.
On January 1, 1994, the association became the CCN de Rennes et de Bretagne, under the leadership of Catherine Diverrès, initially with Bernardo Montent, and then alone until 2008. Diverrès trained at Mudra, performed for Dominique Bagouet, and was introduced to Butoh by Kazuo Ohno. She deeply cared about the spoken word, which was evident in her integration of literary texts into her work. In January 2009, Boris Charmatz changed the name to CCN Musée de la danse, transforming it into a laboratory/institution dedicated to exhibition and conservation, and to residency and dance production. It became a place combining movement and reflection, saying and doing, mirroring the artist’s creations. A decade later, the Collectif FAIR-E renamed it the CCNRB and has been focused since then on action-based initiatives.
In 1991, following the foundation of the TCRB at the Maison du Champ de Mars, the CCNRB began operating in a new building with two studios, located on Rue Saint Melaine. In 2009, the Garage was inaugurated. It is a shared space, with several independent dance companies from Rennes, featuring six studios and located in Beauregard. From this neighbourhood, in this city, in this region, in this country and abroad, the CCNRB showcases the diversity of hip-hop dance and contributes to establishing an open, vibrant choreographic culture.
